It’s important to familiarize yourself with the different types of concrete and their advantages and disadvantages. This way, you can select the type that best fits your needs and budget. There are several primary types of concrete. Some are better than others in certain situations, depending on what you’re looking to get out of your new concrete surface. Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each type will help you make an informed decision when choosing which kind to use for your home or office project.


What is Concrete?

Concrete is a manmade material made from a mixture of cement, water, and gravel or stones. It is used for foundations, roadways, walkways, and more. It is a durable, affordable material that can last for decades with proper care. Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world. It’s made by combining cement, water, sand, gravel, or stones with a few other ingredients to create a dense, durable substance that is highly resistant to water. Plain Concrete

Reinforced Concrete

The rebar is usually encased within the concrete during construction and is rarely visible once the concrete is cured. Reinforced concrete is one of the most commonly used types of concrete for modern construction. It’s used for bridge piers, buildings, dams, parking garages, and hundreds of other structures. It is also used to construct sidewalks, roads, and even foundations for many homes. The main advantages of reinforced concrete are that it’s strong and durable. You can use it to create large structures that will last a long time. Reinforced concrete is also relatively inexpensive to construct. One of the disadvantages of reinforced concrete is that it can be difficult to work with. It requires special tools, like jackhammers, to break it into smaller sections for construction.


Confined-Span Concrete

Confinned-Span concrete is designed for use in applications where loads are confined, meaning they are mostly in one direction, rather than bearing loads from all directions. The most common confined-span concrete applications are bridge decks and airport runways. These large structures are designed to withstand a great deal of weight from vehicles traveling on them one direction – usually the length of the structure. Confinned-span concrete tends to be denser than other types of concrete. However, it’s typically not as dense as other types of reinforced concrete. There are many types of confined-span concrete. The major advantage of confined-span concrete is that it’s long-lasting. It’s designed to withstand a great deal of pressure and weight, which means it will last a long time.

Solid-Surfacing Concrete

Solid-surfacing concrete is designed to be used as a surfacing material, such as for sidewalks, driveways, patios, or even a walkway. Solid-surfacing concrete is very durable. It can last for decades under foot and is resistant to cracks, breaks, and chipping. It’s also available in a variety of colors, which means you can use it to match the theme of your home or office. Solid-surfacing concrete is not as strong as other types of concrete. It’s best suited for use in low-traffic areas. If you expect a lot of foot traffic, it may not be the best choice for your project.


Voids in Reinforced Concrete (VRC)

Voids in Reinforced concrete are pockets of space found within the concrete structure. There are two kinds of voids in reinforced concrete: open and closed. Open voids are those that are located within the concrete, but are open to the surface. These voids were originally filled with air or water, but were later replaced with concrete that had a lower air content. Closed voids are those that are completely surrounded by concrete, but are not completely filled with concrete. Voids in reinforced concrete are often left open as a way to save on concrete costs, as they don’t provide any structural benefit.


Stressed-Skin-Concrete (SSC)

Stressed-Skin-concrete designs are those that combine concrete with an extra layer beneath it, typically a metal mesh or steel panels. This layer of material, called the skin, is designed to support a portion of the weight from above the SSC. SSC is commonly used to build dam spillways, though it’s not limited to this application. It can also be used to construct large-span bridges and other structures that require a significant amount of support from below. The majority of SSC structures are made with a concrete-filled steel mesh. This mix of materials makes SSC very durable and flexible.


Portland cement concrete (PCC)

Portland cement concrete, also called cement concrete, is a type of concrete that contains Portland cement as the primary ingredient. Portland cement concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world. It is extremely durable, and can be used in a variety of applications, including foundations, roadways, and building interiors. Although it’s extremely durable, there are some disadvantages to using Portland cement concrete. Solid-Encased Concrete (SDC)

It’s heavy, and building with it takes considerable time and effort.


Slip-Resistant Concrete

Slip-resistant concrete is designed to provide a safe walking surface for pedestrians and vehicles. It does this by creating a rough surface texture that is designed to provide extra traction. Slip-resistant concrete is commonly used on paths, sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots. It’s also used on stairways and curbs, though it’s not always the best choice for these applications. Slip-resistant concrete is not meant to withstand a lot of traffic. It is generally used in low-traffic areas where a safer walking surface is needed. It’s not meant for areas that see a lot of foot traffic or vehicle traffic.
